Content

This web-site aims at wide dissemination of data on cancer burden in Europe to the public and policy makers. Currently, the bulk of information is provided on two pages, ‘Cancer Fact Sheets’ and ‘Cancer Screening’.

Cancer fact sheets

‘Cancer Fact Sheets’ show numbers of cancer cases and deaths in the European Union and the individual European countries. To account for difference in sizes of the national populations, incidence rates and mortality rates provide numbers of cases and deaths per 100,000 residents. The(se) rates are further age-adjusted to the standard European population (European Standard Rate [ESR]), to account for the variable age structure in different countries. Consequently, the ESRs can be compared between the countries.

The national estimates for 2008 presented through the Cancer Fact Sheets have been published at the EJC.

Ferlay J, Parkin DM, Steliarova-Foucher E. Estimates of cancer incidence and mortality in Europe in 2008. Eur J Cancer. 2010 Mar;46(4):765-81

Previous estimates for 2006 (Ferlay J, Autier P, Boniol M, Heanue M, Colombet M, Boyle P. Estimates of the cancer incidence and mortality in Europe in 2006. Ann Oncol 2007;18:581-92) are still available at: http://annonc.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2007/02/07/annonc.mdl498.full.pdf

Cancer screening

Cancer screening pages give a quick overview of on-going programmes of screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, implemented in 27 European countries.

The information is extracted from the Report on the implementation of the Council Recommendation on Cancer Screening available at: http://ec.europa.eu/health/archive/ph_determinants/genetics/documents/cancer_screening.pdf

Tips for use

Navigation

The selection menu (the vertical bar on the left hand side of the page) offers quick links to the chapters and the figures related to a cancer site or a country.

Making a pdf

The graphs, maps and tables can be exported from the site in pdf format. These pages can then be inserted in a document or a presentation. Get ACROBAT READER

Exporting data

The data in tables or graphs may be exported as “.csv” file, which can then be opened with Excel © (Microsoft Corporation) or another worksheet editing software.
